NEC Baby Formula Attorneys
Did Your Baby Suffer from NEC After Drinking Baby Formula?
Has your child received a diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) after consuming baby formula products made by Enfamil and Similac? The NEC might have been caused directly by consuming baby formula that has since been deemed unsafe for babies who were born prematurely.
Grewal Law PLLC is currently investigating the connection between cow milk-based baby formula and NEC, as well as legal action that has already been formed against Enfamil and Similac for selling unsafe products. If your child was born prematurely, drank cow milk-based baby formula, and suffered from NEC, we want to hear your story as soon as possible. With us leading the way, you can explore your legal options to pursue justice and compensation for your family.
What is NEC?
NEC is a severe gastrointestinal disease that is particularly dangerous to premature infants (born before 37 weeks). The underdeveloped digestive tract and weakened immune system make the infant susceptible to bacterial growth in the intestines, especially after eating contaminated food. If untreated, the bacterial growth can damage the intestines and result in small holes throughout them, which causes undigested food and digestive fluids to leak into the abdomen. This symptom of NEC may prove fatal; the disease has an approximate 25% mortality rate and a 50% incident rate of permanent disabilities.
Infants diagnosed with NEC may suffer from:
- Liver failure
- Slowed physical and mental development
- Malnutrition
- Metabolic bone disease
- Short bowel syndrome
- Sepsis (blood infection)
- Brain damage

NEC Caused by Cow Milk-Based Baby Formula
After decades of research, it has been determined by multiple safety groups and medical organizations that cow milk-based baby formula is the leading cause of NEC in premature babies. One study of nearly 900 premature infants determined that NEC occurred 362% more often in infants fed cow milk-based baby formula when compared to infants who drank human breastmilk or formula based on human breastmilk. Another study from the early ‘90s found the risk was actually as high as 800%.
Despite this knowledge being available for decades, Enfamil and Similac have continued to sell baby formula products that are based on cow milk, not human breastmilk. Furthermore, the brands did not add warning labels to their products about the heightened risk of NEC, especially in premature infants. For these reasons, the makers of Enfamil and Similac – Abbot Laboratories and Mead Johnson & Company, LLC – are being targeted by lawsuits filed by parents whose children were diagnosed with NEC.
Different Similac and Enfamil products linked to NEC and named in certain lawsuits include:
- Similac Special Care
- Similac NeoSure
- Similac Alimentum
- Similac Human Milk Fortifier Powder
- Enfamil Human Milk Fortifier Powder
- Enfacare Powder
- Enfamil NeuroPro Enfacare
- Enfamil Premature
