Diocese of Lansing Clergy Sexual Abuse Scandal

In 2018, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s efforts resulted in the seizure of 1.5 million documents from the Diocese of Lansing to uncover its history of child sexual abuse. The 345-page report released to the public in December 2024 detailed the AG’s findings after years of research and investigation.

According to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, members of the Diocese of Lansing who have been accused of or implicated in acts of clergy sexual abuse include at least:

• 48 priests
• 4 deacons
• 3 religious brothers
• 1 former religious brother

Reports of clergy sexual abuse date all the way back to the 1950s. The Attorney General’s Office said that most instances of abuse were reported in the ‘70s and ‘80s, but accounts span into modern times.
